The above is the preliminary for my next painting. This is oil on watercolor paper prepared with acrylic medium and gesso. I was fairly happy with the result but there are some things I have to adjust in the final. I think the reddish dress looks great but the blue dress needs to be darkened just a bit and the color more neutralized. I also have to cool the color temperature just a little in the girls face. Also the broken fence looks a little funny to me. It almost looks like a very bad perspective on a fence that is going away from the viewer. Oh well, that is what preliminaries are for.

This is the first stage of the final painting. It will be 24"x18", oil on linen. I paid careful attention to the drawing, adjusting the dresses to show the anatomy and posture better. The fence has been totally changed from the preliminary. After I took this photograph I thickened up the younger girls arm somewhat as it looks too small here, also in looking at this I think I need to make the younger girl not so thin as she looks too thin here. Stay tuned for more updates on my progress.

I tackled what I figured would be the most challenging part first, the younger girls face. I had to make sure the values and color temperature were just right, a tricky thing with backlit skin tones. I made sure to put in some background colors so as to be able to judge the face better.

Moving on from the younger girls face I established more of the background, then I moved on to the older girls bonnet. I started out blocking in the darks, then the lights, then the half tones.

With the bonnet finished I blocked in more background to establish mood and atmosphere, two of the most important aspects to this painting.

After painting the older girls face I blocked in the darks of her blouse.

In this step I'm putting in the lights of her blouse.

After the blouse is done I begin blocking in the darks of her arm and hand.

I finish her arm and the move on to the older girl's skirt. Once again I start with the darks, add the lights and then place in the little half tones.

I'm not sure about the big fence beam. I think that will have to go. It seemed like a good idea in the charcoal but I think it takes away from the composition. Stay tuned for more updates.

Here is the final. I removed the fence in the background, painted in the blue dress, adjusted some of the values and added some foliage in the foreground. This is available at Lord Nelson's Gallery in Gettysburg, PA.
