Evening Patrol

The Blackfeet did not tolerate trespassers in the middle 19th century. Many white trappers learned this lesson the hard way and were never heard from again.

This Blackfeet man, riding not too far from his people’s camp, comes upon a hastily made campfire that appears to have been extinguished as quickly as it was made. He rubs the lukewarm ashes in his fingers as he tries to determine who could have made this fire in his people’s country. Most likely it was a solitary person or a very small party given the minimal wear to the surrounding area.
