Bravely Waiting

Indian women had to be very strong in many aspects of life. Not only did they do much of the labor around the village, such as fleshing bison hides, setting up and tearing down lodges, cooking, collecting water and firewood, and making clothing, they also had to endure watching their husbands leave on war parities with the knowledge that they may not return alive.

This beautiful, young Southern Cheyenne woman waits for her husband to return. The light of the setting sun illuminates her face giving a sense of hope in the dark background. He looks is one of strength and courage mixed with a bit of sadness.
