Daughters of the Sun

In mid-summer in the Badlands of North Dakota, I followed these two Hidatsa women up a tall butte overlooking the vast surrounding landscape. They posed on horseback and walked along the crest as the sun began to set. Several times, the light caught the edge of the young women and their horse, creating a luminous glow.

With the distant buttes, the dramatic cliff edge, and the river winding through the valley below, I knew I had a painting that would communicate the beauty before me and capture a timeless moment from the past.
